The History of MSJ
MSJ Productions commenced in early 1999. It came about with the success of it's first performance group "Spice 4". Spice 4 had their first big concerts on the 4th April 1999 to sell-out crowds and went on to perform at Arena Joondalup and later Challenge Stadium with equal success. "Spice 4" has a fan club of over 500 children. They went on to perform on Telethon '99, at shopping centres, and corporate functions. Michelle Johnson (principal) then decided to stage a range of Pop Concerts for her students to perform in and so came "Millennium Pop" which was performed in venues around WA from Regal Theatre to Mandurah Performing Arts Centre.
MSJ Productions now have various ages of performance groups - filled with talented children aged 4 to Adult. They perform regularly around Perth and train in all aspects of performance exclusively with MSJ Productions. Bubblegum have been featured in the national Barbie Magazine and promoted on Channel 7's "Today Tonight" as "Perth's primary school Popstars".
Michelle having been head choreographer for many Perth modelling agencies and fashion parades, also has great success in local competitions with her MSJ Modelling talent. MSJ Concerts are held in Term 4 of each year and from these concerts Michelle talent scouts for models, dancers, performers and future teachers to be trained. Students may be chosen to move on to more advanced levels or an older age group based on teacher feedback and stage performance.
At MSJ we believe that the more stage experience young performers can gain, the better. Therefore during the year we hold many events from talent quests such as MSJ Idol, Modelling Competitions, Concerts and Cabaret events. With the success of our first musical Annie Jr. in 2004 and after our re-run of Annie Jr. in 2006 and 2010, MSJ are currently looking into holding more musical productions to show off the wonderful talent at MSJ Productions.
For the last 8 years, MSJ have started training students to enter Perth's dance competitions. MSJ compete in On Stage Competitions in April and Kwinana Dance Festival in October each year. We enter troupes, duos/trios and solos for these competitions. Great for experience on stage and to get feedback from professional judges. MSJ is highly successful in these competitions and its something the students really look forward to during the year.
MSJ continues to grow and expand and recently travelled to the USA for a 2011/12 tour. Performing at Disneyland, California Adventure Park, Universal Studios and Hollywood Boulevard, the students and teachers gained even more experience and skills. We are looking forward to further training and performing tours!
Most recently, our students starred in the professional production of Annie held at the Crown Theatre in Perth. With 4 students selected to play lead roles (including one of the Annies!) we couldnt be prouder of what these girls have achieved. We consider ourselves to be leaders in Musical Theatre training in Perth and look forward to our stars of the future growing into the next Broadway stars!
